Parenting 101: Watch What You Say

It occurred to me today, that I really need to watch what I say in front of Calvin. Well okay, that didn't just occur to me, but when you realize they pick up on things that you didn't intend as bad, but you hear them say it and it sounds really bad...for instance, I use the term, "that's gay," in regards to objects or things I personally feel are nonsensical or ridiculous. Or on occasion, I may tell a person I am really close to (usually only Will or a sibling) "don't be gay," however I never mean it as "don't be homosexual" in fact I'm always telling Will he should try to be a little more gay (homosexual), or as my friend refers to her husband as JEG "just enough gay." So when I tell Will, "Don't be gay," it usually means "don't do that thing that I personally think is not cool." Which I realize now that me referring to anything as gay is "not cool," besides being rude and disrespectful.

So at church, we were sitting in the primary room with Calvin, because he was in time-out. A man comes walking in to get something and to try to scare Calvin into obeying, Will says to him, "If you don't be a good boy, you're going to have to go clean the toilets with that man." So Calvin then says, "No Dad, he's gay!" Um, yeah, not my shining moment as a parent.

HILARIOUS story and pictures. It is true. We have to be careful of what we are saying around Lane right now too.
